For the different sorts of utilisation, grades of sodium hydroxide solution are governed by the following norms:

• DIN EN 896 concerning water treatment for human consumption;
• DIN 19616, sheet 1, concerning water treatment not for regeneration of ion exchangers;
• DIN 19616, sheet 2, concerning water treatment for regeneration of ion exchangers.
